Moments to Cherish

August 17, 2006

Today is a big day! School has started once again and I shed a small happy tear as my firstborn son walked the path up to school for 1st grade. I’m glad that school has started again but then I already miss him. These moments of our life make us step outside ourselves and look at the whole picture. Our kids are growing up into their own little personalities. We want them to change and grow but then when we stop and see how quickly it happens it surprises us.

We had a wonderful visit from Tom’s Dad last weekend. He lives out of town and we only see him a couple times a year. He usually comes up for the family reunion every August and so we get to visit with him then. Joe and Annie came over to our home Saturday morning bearing many gifts for the kids. They had toys and a big box of new clothes. The new kids clothes actually had my name on them, but the kids had them out of the box and started trying them on before I could look at them. They were in heaven with their new duds!

Later that evening we went to Kenny and Barbs for a fish fry. We had the best time! Thanks everyone for all the gifts and for the wonderful family time together. We really enjoyed it.

This week I have tried to let Julian enjoy some last minute favorite things before school started. So Monday he spent the night with my parents and then spent the entire day fishing! Fishing has become Julian’s favorite thing to do and he has become quite the pro at it. He can change his bobbers and lures, catch minnows and bait them on his hook, he can unhook a fish and throw it back like any well-seasoned fisherman.

Catch of the day.

One thing that we have done as a family the last few summers is to spend time at the school track. We go in the evenings when it has cooled down and walk and play with the kids; it’s a great place to take our kites and hover crafts too. The kids absolutely love it and beg to go. They can run and play and I’m sure it seems like massive acres of playground to them.

Julian has always donned his currently favorite superhero gettup to wear to the track. It’s a tradition. He flies around the track on his bigwheel or bike with cape a’flyin’. Just recently Jaden has decided that he loves superheroes too and it’s been great to see the boys have something in common now. They have been flying over every piece of furniture and dealing with villains non-stop for the past couple weeks.

Jaden, I mean, Superman flying across the bleachers.

Evely discovered puddling. She would stand in the middle of the puddle. Stretch her arms up as high as she could and then splash them into the puddle. Then she would exclaim “WET!”.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.

But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children– from Psalm 103

  1. I LOVE the pic of Jaden ‘flying’!

Julian looks so grown up. Time is really flying by. James and I can’t believe summer is already over. I have some adjusting to do!

I shed a tear this morning too. Jessica is so tired she can hardly keep her eyes open. I am going to put her to bed soon. She is soaking in warm bath water right now.

  2. Lydia started a project as soon as she got home. That’s what she often does throughout the school year. Tonight she cleaned and organized the playroom into a school room. I think she was inspired today.

  3. That sounds just like Lydia, Miss Project. Hee Hee

Julian been pretty moody tonight. I think he is tired. Just seems to want to pester everyone and get into trouble. 😐

  4. The boys look really cute in their matching outfits…eventhough I must admit that I sympathize with them. My younger brother and I endured that period of time where we were in matching clothes and I remember older cousins teasing us about it.

Love the superhero adventure tales. Those pics crack me up.

  5. Carl, for some reason my boys love to be in matching outfits! Julian will specifically go pick out something at least sort of matching if they don’t have anything that truly matches.

Yes, I am really enjoying these superhero days.

  6. I love super hero kids!!!!! I am so glad Elaina is our little super girl!

Karen, have you been anywhere lately that has superman capes. I can’t find just the cape anywhere. I promised Ewan one and I’m sick that I can’t find it. I got Elaina’s at wal-mart for 4 bucks. Where are all the capes? I don’t want to pay $30 for an entire outfit.

  7. I haven’t seen them anywhere either. They had them at Christmas time for really cheap and now I can’t find them. I haven’t looked anywhere besides walmart, though. They had the batman masks for $1.00 too and now they don’t. Go figure!

  8. I love the superheros! Little boys are so much fun!

Jules-Chandler has two or three Superman capes & I know they all came from Wal-Mart. We have one “fancy” cape that has sound effects built into the shoulder/neck part of the cape. When you “fly” it makes a cute “breezy/whoosh” noise :-). Chandler got that cape for Christmas and it was $20….so, not exactly cheap 😐 !

  9. I’m sure we wouldn’t have minded if one of our uncles didn’t tease us so mercilessly.

It was great seeing you guys last night. The kids, as always, cracked me up. Especially Jaden and his regularly stopping by my chair to let me know what he was doing. So cute. Love Evely’s mean faces as well. You gotta get pics of those.

  10. You’re right, Carl. I do need to get the mean looks she gives on film. This time will pass and we will forget she does that.

We really enjoyed visiting with you guys last night too. Thanks, Mary, for putting Evely to sleep when she was losing it! :love
